Friedrich Hölderlin

Germany, 1770–1843. One of the greatest German lyric poets, between classicism and romanticism; he sang of ancient Greece and of nature before sinking into a madness he lived out for thirty-six years in a tower on the Neckar. 'Half of Life' is his most perfect poem. His work is in the public domain.
