Persia/Anatolia (Balkh–Konya), 1207–1273. A Sufi poet and mystic, among the most-read poets in the world; his Masnavi and his Divan of Shams of Tabriz sing of divine love and the longing for union. He inspired the order of the whirling dervishes. His work is in the public domain.
