San Juan de la Cruz

Spain, 1542–1591. Carmelite friar, mystic, and one of the peaks of Spanish lyric poetry. He reformed his order alongside Teresa of Ávila, was imprisoned for it, and composed part of his work in jail. His work is in the public domain.
