Taras Shevchenko

Ukraine, 1814–1861. Born a serf and freed at twenty-four, he is Ukraine's national poet and the father of its modern literature; also a painter, and a martyr to the Ukrainian cause, exiled by the tsar and forbidden to write. 'Zapovit' ('Testament') is his most-recited poem. His work is in the public domain.
