Midwinter Night

William James Roe (1843–1921)

The year begins in the winter,And the day begins in the night,And the soul that shall live foreverOn the earth begins its flight.

The new year shall yet be summer; The night shall be followed by day;And the soul that shall live foreverFrom the earth shall speed away.

The earth is the night and the winter,And heaven is summer and day;As we tread on the steps of the hoursBe as sure and as patient as they.
